Assessment for Gifted Learners

Understanding Assessment for Gifted Learners

Children develop and learn at different rates, and some demonstrate advanced abilities well beyond what is typically expected for their age. These children may display exceptional reasoning skills, rapid learning, advanced vocabulary, creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, or an intense curiosity and desire for knowledge. While gifted children often perform well academically, this is not always the case. Some gifted learners may become bored, disengaged, underachieve, or experience social and emotional challenges if their learning needs are not adequately understood and supported.

An assessment for gifted learners provides a comprehensive evaluation of a child's cognitive abilities and academic achievement. It helps identify areas of exceptional strength and better understand a child's learning profile. The information gained can assist families and schools in making informed decisions regarding educational planning, enrichment opportunities, acceleration, and appropriate learning supports.

For many families, a gifted assessment provides valuable insight into how their child learns and helps ensure their educational environment is appropriately matched to their abilities and potential.

Assessment Measures

At Skyview Psychology, assessments for gifted learners are conducted using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Fourth Edition (WIAT-4).

The WISC-V provides a detailed assessment of cognitive abilities, including verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. The WIAT-4 evaluates academic achievement across areas such as reading, written expression, mathematics, and oral language.

Using both cognitive and academic assessment measures provides a comprehensive understanding of a child's intellectual abilities and academic performance. This approach helps identify areas of exceptional strength, determine whether a child's achievement is consistent with their cognitive potential, and provide evidence to support educational planning and recommendations for gifted learners.

What to Expect

The gifted and talented assessment process typically involves several stages to develop a comprehensive understanding of your child's cognitive abilities, academic achievement, and learning needs.

Initial Parent Consultation
The process begins with a parent consultation session, during which detailed background, developmental, educational, and family information is gathered. This appointment also provides an opportunity to discuss the reasons for seeking an assessment, clarify the referral questions, and explain the assessment process in more detail. This session is usually conducted in person in my Bega rooms, however, may be completed via telehealth in some circumstances.

Assessment Sessions
Your child will then attend two to three assessment sessions, depending on their age, needs, and the assessment measures being used. During these sessions, a range of activities and tasks are completed to assess cognitive abilities and academic achievement. Areas assessed may include reasoning, problem-solving, memory, processing speed, reading, writing, mathematics, and oral language. These sessions are conducted in person in my Bega rooms.

Scoring, Interpretation and Report Writing
Following the assessment sessions, the results are carefully scored, analysed, and interpreted. Where relevant, additional information such as previous assessments, school reports, and teacher feedback may also be reviewed. Information gathered throughout the assessment process is integrated into a comprehensive written report outlining cognitive and academic strengths, giftedness indicators, and recommendations to support your child's educational development and wellbeing.

Feedback and Recommendations
Once the report has been completed, a feedback session is held with parents or caregivers to discuss the assessment findings and recommendations. This session provides an opportunity to ask questions, gain a clear understanding of the results, and discuss appropriate educational supports, enrichment opportunities, acceleration options, or next steps. A copy of the assessment report is provided at this time. This session is usually conducted in person in my Bega rooms, however, may be completed via telehealth in some circumstances.
